This Great Falls renovation transforms an existing pool and deck into a modern poolside environment designed for connection, comfort, and elevated outdoor living.
When the family set out to renovate their existing pool and deck, they wanted a brighter, more functional outdoor setting – one designed for gathering, relaxation, and seamless movement between zones.
Rossen Landscape approached the project as a complete transformation – merging modern materials, integrated structural solutions, and softened landscape transitions into a cohesive retreat that feels both refined and welcoming.
At the center of the renovation was the pool itself – refinished to restore clarity and elevate its visual presence. The upgraded interior finish enhanced the water’s tone and reflectivity, creating a luminous surface that captured light throughout the day and anchored the surrounding deck.
Encircling the pool, a newly installed travertine deck established a clean architectural foundation. Selected for its timeless elegance and performance, the travertine will also remain cool underfoot during the height of summer, ensuring barefoot comfort without sacrificing sophistication.
Together, these refinements modernized the entire environment while preserving a sense of warmth and livability.
A key objective was to widen the deck to accommodate additional seating and enhance usability. Rather than simply extending square footage, the expansion was designed to feel integrated and purposeful.
A built-in bench was incorporated into a newly constructed retaining wall – serving as both structural support and generous seating. It anchors the space visually and functionally, creating a natural gathering point along the pool’s edge.
To enhance functionality and convenience, an outdoor shower was added on the deck side with close proximity to the pool. Though subtle in scale, this addition significantly improves the flow and practicality of the space – ensuring it is as functional as it is beautiful.
Deck boards were painted and replaced to create a cohesive, refreshed surface. House-side steps were rebuilt to include integrated bench seating, further reinforcing the theme of multifunctional design.
Every element of this upgraded deck was crafted to maximize usability without cluttering the clean, modern lines of the space.
To achieve a lighter, brighter atmosphere, the existing railing was replaced with a refined vinyl and aluminum system. This upgrade allows natural light to flow freely across the deck and introduces a low-maintenance finish that supports long-term durability.
Transitions were equally important when upgrading this space. Deck steps leading toward the front yard were replaced with defined hardscape steps and a landing, creating a smoother, more intuitive progression between spaces. Movement between areas now feels effortless – guiding guests naturally from poolside lounging to the adjacent garden areas.
What was once a disconnected and visually abrupt hillside is now a softened, integrated feature of the design.
Natural boulder steppers were thoughtfully embedded into the slope, providing functional access to the upper lawn while introducing sculptural texture. These stone elements feel grounded in the landscape – inviting exploration while anchoring the vertical transition.
Layered plantings were installed to soften the retaining elements and create a natural gradient between hardscape and turf. The hillside now frames the pool environment, adding depth and a sense of balance to the overall composition.
What was once a dated and underutilized pool deck is now a unified outdoor environment designed for modern living. Every decision – from the cool travertine underfoot to the integrated seating walls and softened hillside – was crafted with intention, making the space feel lighter, more open, and more inviting.
The updated area accommodates entertaining with ease, expands usable square footage without overwhelming the setting, and creates seamless transitions between pool, deck, and lawn.
